Everywhere Wireless, a wholesale Internet service provider and consulting company, reflects on the recent issue of illegally redistributing and rebroadcasting shared Internet services to apartment and condominium communities across the country. According to Everywhere Wireless, regardless of what your account representative or salesman says, owners and property managers are not allowed to rebroadcast a residential or business class Internet connection from any of the major Internet providers – it’s against their terms of service. Comcast, RCN, AT&T, Mediacom, Verizon, Centurylink and nearly all other providers expressly prohibit the rebroadcast of their residential or business, DSL or Cable Internet services, wirelessly or wired, to more than one apartment, hotel or condominium unit – even if the end-user is not charged.

Beginning in the late 2000s, a number of “Wi-Fi companies” started to resell Cable and DSL technologies by aggregating the connections and then rebroadcasting them to entire hotels or apartment or condominium communities...Have you ever noticed how at 6:00 pm on a Sunday night your Internet connection slows down?” DeMeritt asks. “That’s because everyone is sitting down and watching Netflix with their family. Streaming video, making Skype calls, logging onto your company VPN; all of these activities require data and with shared bandwidth, that data isn’t always available. Securing dedicated bandwidth is the only way to ensure a 99.9% uptime guarantee and fixed prices.”

DeMeritt says he has seen many examples that showcase this negligence, such as an apartment community in Texas that contracted a Wi-Fi company which then purchased 32 individual, business-class Internet connections from Time Warner to be rebroadcast to all of the residents. He also talked about a high-profile condominium association in downtown Chicago that had taken an AT&T DSL connection and a Comcast business class Internet connection, aggregated the bandwidth and then redistributed it through Ethernet to all homeowners. “Unfortunately, this type of activity is completely against the terms of service.” DeMeritt warns.

Everywhere Wireless, LLC and its affiliate, EW Fiber, specialize in designing, consulting, delivering, installing and managing wholesale, dedicated, fiber optic Internet and other technologies, specifically for multi-family properties across the country.
