Jamie Oliver has declared war on the public health threat of childhood obesity. August 10, 2012
Childhood obesity, processed food options for school lunches and kids who don’t know how to cook – a trifecta of problems facing youth today. Jamie Oliver, better known as The Naked Chef has taken these problems to heart and spent the good portion of his career educating Great Britain and us across the pond about how to return to good food and healthy eating.
Jamie Oliver is a world-renowned chef, a best-selling author, owner of three restaurants-with one of them, Union Jacks, partnered up with local Arizona resident Chris Bianco, winner of TED Talks prize in 2010, invited to cook for Former Prime Minister Tony Blair and President Obama, and runs the Jamie Oliver Foundation.
This month in Green Living magazine, Editor-in-Chief Tishin Donkersley, M.A. puts on her apron and takes on the apprentice role as Jamie shares his inspirational Foundation efforts to combat the public threat of childhood obesity through his four projects in England: Fifteen Apprentice Program, Kitchen Garden Project, Jamie’s School Dinners and Minister of Food; and in the United States: Food Revolution.
His direction is clear, “to inspire as many people as possible to love and enjoy good food,” Jamie states.
With the United States facing an increase in childhood obesity from 5 to 18 percent for children aged 12 to 19 and the health risks associated with obesity, nutrition and healthy eating is at the forefront of this public threat.
“There is plenty more we can do to combat unhealthy food provided for our children in our schools. Corn dogs and chips as lunch options are not acceptable, it’s adding to the problem!” Donkersley said.
In “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” TV series, his goal was to improve the health of school children in Huntington, VA, deemed the unhealthiest city in 2006 by the CDC. He began by removing flavored milk and switching out French fries for a salad bar. How can parents start their own Revolution? “Easy-they can set a good example at home, cook and eat real food from scratch, and teach their children the basic cooking skills,” Jamie said.
