Mission Essential Personnel, LLC (MEP) is the first company to achieve 100 percent participation with Pelotonia, the annual grassroots, cancer-fighting bicycle ride taking place this weekend. To help raise money for cancer research, 100 percent of the employees in MEP’s Columbus HQ have signed up to become virtual riders, riders, or volunteers.
“This has been a wonderful opportunity to rally our MEP team around a great cause,” said MEP CEO Peter Horvath, who also sits on the board of the James and will ride 180 miles this weekend. “MEP can’t match the funds raised by larger corporations, but we can match the spirit of Pelotonia. We decided to target 100 percent participation for our team in Ohio, as well as those who join us from the National Capital Region. It’s been a rallying point for everyone across the company.”
Pelotonia funds cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Thanks to corporate sponsorship, 100 percent of money raised by the race goes directly to research. In its first three rides, Pelotonia attracted more than 11,000 riders and 2,800 volunteers from 35 states, and raised $35 million for cancer research.
“We’re extremely impressed with the level of dedication that MEP has demonstrated in reaching this goal,” said Tom Lennox, CEO of Pelotonia. “Success like this tends to snowball, so I’m predicting that MEP’s example will inspire other companies to increase their involvement in the future. A cure will be found sooner because of their involvement.”
MEP’s team of 14 employees will ride a more than 1,000 miles combined. Fifty other MEP employees outside of Columbus have also signed up as virtual riders, including 16 deployed to Afghanistan. In 2011, only six MEP employees were involved as riders– just about 4 percent of staff at its HQ.
“I’ve been looking forward to the ride this weekend since last year’s Pelotonia,” said MEP recruiting support specialist and long-time Columbus resident Jennifer Jenks, the team captain of MEP’s Peloton in both 2011 and 2012. “This year everyone’s involved, which has been inspiring to see. MEP
