These statistics relate to the percentage of crashes that have been caused in the state by excessive speed as well as the number of crashes where alcohol was listed as a factor. These percentages are growing in number compared to previous statistical studies, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Specifically, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol recently stated that nearly 500 vehicle occupants were killed in Oklahoma vehicle crashes during the calendar year 2010. A full 33 percent of these fatalities were the result of collisions that involved at least one driver who was impaired by alcohol or some other form of intoxicant. In addition, 28 percent of all people killed in Oklahoma car accidents during 2010 lost their lives in crashes that were caused by excessive speed.

Of all of the age groups of driving age in Oklahoma, males between the ages of 18 and 34 are most likely to partake in what the Oklahoma Highway Patrol referred to as high-risk behavior including the failure to wear seat belts and drinking and driving. A full 40 percent of the 18-34-year-old males who were killed in Oklahoma car accidents in 2010 did so because at least one driver involved in the crash was impaired. All of these percentages were higher than the previous statistical survey.

Overall, approximately 70,000 Oklahoma car accidents occur every year in the state, and these crashes lead to more than 36,000 injuries and to 700 fatalities on average.
