Former Justice Richard Sanders faces tough opposition in his bid to regain a seat on Washington's Supreme Court. Sanders, who lost a narrow re-election bid two years ago, is aiming to finish in the top half of a field of four highly accomplished candidates for the spot being vacated by retiring Justice Tom Chambers. King County Superior Court Judge Bruce Hilyer, former Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg and Seattle appellate lawyer Sheryl Gordon McCloud are also running. The top two finishers in Tuesday's primary will advance to the general election, unless someone wins more than 50 percent of the vote, in which case that candidate would advance to the general election unopposed. Justices Steve Gonzalez and Susan Owens are running to retain their seats.
