Three Brooklyn hospitals are completely self-insured in the event of a malpractice lawsuit, reported The New York Times, citing a 2009 health department survey. New York medical malpractice lawyers at The Perecman Firm understand that those hospitals are Interfaith Medical Center, Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center and Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.
As reported by The New York Times, twelve other hospitals across the city were partially self-insured.
“When a hospital is self-insured, it means the hospital itself reserves money for potential lawsuits instead of paying for insurance,” explained David Perecman, a medical malpractice lawyer in New York for over 30 years.
According to the NYT, the money set aside by the hospitals was insufficient in several cases.
“It’s not illegal for a hospital to cut malpractice lawsuit insurance, but it is irresponsible. If hospital negligence results in wrongful death or a serious injury, the victim deserves adequate medical malpractice compensation,” said Perecman, a medical malpractice attorney dedicated to protecting the rights of individuals whose lives have been changed as a result of a health care provider’s negligence.
If a person was injured as a result of medical malpractice or medical negligence, he or she may be entitled to compensation including past and future medical bills; lost wages; and pain and suffering.
