The American Academy of Pediatrics (“AAP”) has urged a review of cell phone radiation standards for children from the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”), Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients injured by cell phone radiation, reports. Cell phone radiation is measured by the specific absorption rate (“SAR”), which is the amount of radiofrequency (“RF”) energy absorbed by the body. Current guidelines set the maximum SAR to be 1.6 watts per kilogram, according to a Time Healthland report.

Cell phone radiation standards were set in 1996 and are based on exposure to an adult male. AAP President Dr. Robert Block told Time Healthland, “Children, however, are not little adults and are disproportionately impacted by all environmental exposures, including cell phone radiation. In fact, according to [the International Agency for Research on Cancer], when used by children, the average RF energy deposition is two times higher in the brain and 10 times higher in the bone marrow of the skull, compared with mobile phone use by adults.”

Bernstein Liebhard LLP partner Jeffrey S. The Firm is currently a part of a small consortium of law firms leading the litigation against cell phone manufacturers, alleging that manufacturers failed to adequately warn users about the dangers of cell phone radiation.

Cell Phone Radiation Safety Concerns Growing

The FCC submitted a proposal to reevaluate cell phone radiation emission standards in June 2012 to determine whether radiation standards should be adjusted for devices used mostly by kids.* Dr. Block noted that standards for all cell phones should “be based on protecting the youngest and most vulnerable populations to ensure they are safeguarded throughout their lifetimes.”

Recent studies have shown that cell phone radiation from prolonged use may put individuals at an increased risk for certain types of brain tumors. In May 2011, the World Health Organization reclassified cell phones as a possibly cancer causing agent. The WHO also voiced concerns about children’s use of cell phones. Children’s thinner skulls put them at higher risk for cell phone radiation side effects, as they absorb radio frequencies at higher rates.

Bernstein Liebhard LLP continues to investigate cell phone radiation side effects. Individuals who have used a cell phone for significant time periods for more than seven years and developed glioma, acoustic neuroma, or meningioma may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and more.
