Vancouver Career College announced today the launch of three new Social Services Worker programs designed to prepare graduates for this rewarding and in-demand field. Applications are now being accepted at the Abbotsford, Kelowna, Surrey and Coquitlam campuses.

Today, more than ever, qualified social services workers are needed to help communities deal with problems of poverty, addiction and mental illness. At Vancouver Career College, students examine today’s bio-socio-economic challenges and develop the tools for overcoming them, including psychology, professional communications, and case management. For example, the 29-week Social Services Worker Foundations program prepares students to help people and families cope with issues such as poverty, addiction, and mental health with the expertise and resources for managing their daily lives. Two additional specialist programs build on the Social Services Worker Foundations program over the course of 44 weeks.

The Social Services Worker Recovery Specialist program focuses on addiction and the negative impact it has on families and communities. From the basics of pharmacology to assessment, planning, and relapse prevention, students learn the skills they need to help clients improve their quality of life.

At-risk youths struggle with complex issues that are often brought on by peers, family members, and difficult social environments. The Social Services Worker Youth Specialist program responds with the study of youth-specific issues, such as violence, gangs, and addiction. To assist youths and their families, students learn the techniques of advocacy, intervention, treatment, and prevention.

Graduates hone their skills through hands-on practicum placements to prepare them to succeed in a variety of settings, including mental health clinics, schools, hospitals, and group homes. In small, student-focused classrooms, graduates secure the understanding and knowledge they need to provide services aimed at protecting and helping people, and when possible, reuniting friends and families.

Applications are now being accepted for all three programs at campuses in Abbotsford, Kelowna, Surrey and Coquitlam.
