In August 2001, the Conservation Minister of the day, Sandra Lee, rejected the Globe Progress (Macraes) mine and a 46ha pit. The decision angered West Coast residents, who marched in their hundreds to Parliament. That December, the Greymouth Star reported that a 35ha pit had been allowed.
