For pet parents across America, Independence Day is filled with fun, festive summertime traditions...GoPetplan.com">Petplan pet insurance encourages pet parents to remember that parades, fireworks and backyard bonanzas may fall flat for – or flat-out frighten – four-legged friends.

“Backyard barbecues, concerts, parades and fireworks displays are all traditions pet parents look forward to on July Fourth, but it’s important to be aware of the risks these can pose for pets,” says Dr. Jules Benson, Vice President of Veterinary Services at Petplan. “As with any celebration, the increased activity and excitement can lead to stressful situations and health hazards, so I recommend careful consideration before deciding to include Fido or Fluffy in your patriotic party plans.”

With that in mind, Petplan offers the following tips to help pet parents keep furry family members safe during Fourth of July celebrations:

  • Safely Out of Sight: If you’re expecting friends and family over for an Independence Day barbecue, consider setting up a room with water, food, toys and a comfy pet bed, where your pet can stay safe and secure. With people coming and going, it’s all too easy for a door or backyard gate to be left ajar, and a pet to wander away.
  • Paws Off! Most pets can’t resist the smell of roasting hot dogs and burgers – or the flickering of a flame – so be vigilant in protecting your pet from open fire and heat. Keep an eye on what falls from the coals, as well, since some foods like onions and garlic could lead to gastrointestinal flare-ups for dogs.
  • Sniff, Boom, Bang! If your Independence Day plans include attending a parade or fireworks display, consider leaving your pet at home, especially if loud noises set him off. If you do decide to bring your dog along, keep a firm grip on his leash at all times to ensure he doesn’t get lost in the crowd...The tiny chip, implanted easily in the back of your dog’s neck, will make a reunion much easier should your pet make a great escape from the festivities.
  • Some (Don’t!) Like it Hot: On midsummer days, temperatures can soar – especially if you’re spending most of it outdoors. Make sure your pet has a shady spot and plenty of fresh water to help him stay cool, whether you’re at the beach or in the backyard. And remember – even on cooler days your car can heat up quickly, so never leave your pet in the car, windows cracked open or not.
  • Sparkler Safety: If you’re planning to enjoy fireworks at home, be sure to pick up all spent sparklers and used matches when the show’s over.
