American Sentinel University Appoints Geospatial Technology Educator Dr. Stephen McElroy as GIS Program Chair

American Sentinel University has appointed Dr. Stephen McElroy as the geographic information systems (GIS) program chair effective June 18, 2012. In his new position, Dr. McElroy will be working with the American Sentinel information technology academic team to enhance the university’s geospatial technology programs and integrate geospatial learning materials throughout American Sentinel’s curriculum. Council for Higher Education Accreditation, today announced that Dr. Stephen McElroy has joined the university as geographic information systems (GIS) program chair effective June 18, 2012.

In his new position, Dr. McElroy will be working with the American Sentinel information technology academic team to enhance the university’s geospatial technology programs and integrate geospatial learning materials throughout American Sentinel’s curriculum.

Previously, Dr. McElroy was the assistant director of the cartography and geospatial technologies department for Statistical Research, Inc. Tucson, Arizona.

Dr. McElroy holds a bachelor’s degree in international affairs from the University of Cincinnati, a master’s degree in Latin American studies from the University of Arizona and a doctorate in geography from the joint program at San Diego State University and the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also holds a geographic information systems professional certification from the GIS Certification Institute and an educational teaching certificate from the State of Arizona.

Academic studies and employment have taken Dr. McElroy to field assignments in South America, Central America and Europe. Dr. McElroy demonstrates a commitment to high quality education, professional development and community involvement in the geospatial field,” says Dr. Devon A. Cancilla, dean, business and technology at American Sentinel University. “In addition to leading the geospatial programs at American Sentinel, Dr. McElroy will be responsible for integrating geospatial concepts and practice into each of the university’s programs to provide students in every discipline the opportunity to understand how geospatial approaches can be used to enhance their professional and civic lives.
