For good or bad, summer is finally here and many parents are still scrambling to piece together great activities for their children to keep them engaged, safe and happy until heading back to school in the fall. Two seasoned tech veterans and Seattle moms recently launched FUNnerator.com (http://www.FUNnerator.com), an online marketplace that connects parents and caregivers with the most comprehensive repository of out-of-school activities all year long. This free website, currently in beta, includes more than 7,200 camps and activity listings and is adding more every day. With FUNnerator.com, parents have one central location to find thousands of great camps and activities, perform quick searches based on their specific needs and criteria, compare notes with other parents and connect directly with activity providers and camps right from the website.
The Idea behind FUNnerator.com
FUNnerator.com was founded by Katie Thompson (formerly a partner at Trilogy Equity Partners) and Kristen Hamilton (formerly co-founder of Onvia, now a public company), both parents and successful tech entrepreneurs, who had grown frustrated with how difficult it was to find and plan activities for their own children. They believed that with so much technology available, there had to be a better way to streamline this process and save parents time.
“The process of finding activities and information about out-of-school activities is totally broken,” said Katie Thompson, CEO of FUNnerator. “For parents, it’s a logistical nightmare that recurs every time our kids’ schedules change with the seasons. It involves hours of online searches, endless phone calls to the programs and then to other parents, and forms upon forms to fill out. I had a ‘lightning bolt’ moment when I realized I could quickly and easily find out more information online about the flange of the coffee maker I was buying for my in-laws, than I could find about my daughter’s karate school. So we decided to use our own experience as parents, and the very best technology to solve this problem. ”
How it Works
FUNnerator.com is easy for parents and caregivers to use. People can sign up and start using the tools to search camps and activities by age, zip code, type of activity, dates or cost...The site also allows parents to look for camps and activities that are focused on special needs, or programs that are allergy aware.
The FUNnerator team believes that all children benefit from going to camp and enrichment activities and has set up special search parameters that allow families to search by for financial scholarships.
FUNnerator is currently in beta, and initially covers Washington State. The company has plans for expansion soon.
