Verizon and AT&T Share Top Billing for LTE Data Speeds in Baton Rouge

The RootMetrics scout team professionally tests how mobile carriers perform in cities across the country. The new Baton Rouge RootScore report analyzes results from 6,809 real-world call, data, and text tests on the AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon networks, providing a detailed look at cell coverage and carrier performance in the city.

This is RootMetrics’ first RootScore Report for Baton Rouge. AT&T and Verizon, which both offer LTE service in Baton Rouge, clearly outpaced the other carriers.

“LTE performance and 4G capability are becoming critical concerns for consumers looking to purchase a new device or mobile plan,” said Bill Moore, CEO of RootMetrics. “We are evaluating carrier data performance, along with text and call performance, in cities around the country to provide the most accurate information possible so that consumers can make an informed decision.”

In Baton Rouge, AT&T’s LTE network edged ahead of Verizon to record the fastest average download speed of 12.9 Mbps, while Verizon outranked AT&T and offered a faster average upload speed of 7.6 Mbps.

T-Mobile finished in 3rd place for both average download and upload speed. Sprint’s data speeds trailed those of the other carriers by a significant margin, as WiMAX was unavailable in the area.

Which Carrier Ranks First in Baton Rouge?    
RootMetrics sorted results to share with consumers which carrier provided the fastest and most reliable data network, which carrier had the fewest blocked and dropped calls and which carrier offered the fastest text service.

•Data Performance: The RootMetrics data performance tests analyzed how fast each carrier’s network was able to download and upload files and how often a customer could successfully connect to the data network.

Though Verizon slightly trailed AT&T when comparing average download speed (12.9 Mbps for AT&T versus 10.9 Mbps for Verizon), they actually recorded a greater percentage of their download tests at speeds greater than 5 Mbps, a threshold RootMetrics qualifies as “4G” speed. Verizon recorded speeds faster than 5 Mbps in 84.5% of their tests, while AT&T managed to surpass this speed in 67.7% of tests.

Looking at how often a carrier delivers fast speeds, rather than the speed alone, provides a richer context of what the consumer experiences. From this angle of performance, Verizon more consistently delivered speeds over 5 Mbps.

Verizon’s average upload speed was 7.6 Mbps, compared to 5.5 Mbps for AT&T.

T-Mobile finished in 3rd, with an average download speed of 4.3 Mbps and 1.3 Mbps average upload speed. Sprint recorded the greatest percentage of download tests below 1.5 Mbps, doing so in a markedly high 98.2% of tests.

•Call Performance: With AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon recording statistically equal performances, RootMetrics did not declare a clear victor in the call category. Hurt by a blocked call rate (the inability to place an outgoing call) that was much higher than the rates of the other carriers, T-Mobile finished last in call testing.

•Text Performance: RootMetrics compared how long it took each carrier to receive a single text message. Verizon & AT&T delivered equally strong performances and shared the top spot in the text category.

At 3.4 seconds, Verizon ranked first in overall receive time, while Sprint’s time of 13.1 seconds ranked last. AT&T and Verizon tied for first when comparing how long it took to receive a text from within a carrier’s own network. Sprint finished in last place, with a time of 11.8 seconds.

T-Mobile recorded a text failure in 6.5% of their tests, marking the highest rate RootMetrics has recorded for them to date.

•Overall: With the strongest overall performance in Baton Rouge, Verizon and AT&T tied for the top spot in the combined standings. The final results are:
1 – Verizon (90.7)
1 – AT&T (88.5)
3—T-Mobile (48.2)
3 – Sprint (44.9)
