June 2012 – German kitchen manufacturer bulthaup recently hosted the U.S. debut of “indenraumwachsen” at its New York showroom during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair on May 21st. June 06, 2012
As the first execution of indenraumwachsen, bulthaup showcased a new b3 interior fitting (drawer and pullout) system at the New York event that’s based on the use of functional prisms -geometric kitchen components and accessories that fit precisely into V-shaped channels in crafted drawer inserts that run parallel to the length of the cabinets. Users can change, remove and re-organize components and accessories over time to fit their changing needs.
“bulthaup’s goal has always been to create kitchen systems and products that are functional at their core and serve people’s needs for the long-term, “ said bulthaup’s U.S. CEO David Westover. “Kitchens are meant to be used and enjoyed, not just admired. Indenraumwachsen and the new products are natural steps for bulthaup, and so far the market has responded very positively.”
The company also featured a prototype 10 millimeter thick concrete kitchen worktop at the event. While not yet available for sale, the countertop on display was shipped all the way from Germany as one solid 16-foot piece. It is precision-engineered to fit perfectly within bulthaup’s defined tolerances, specifications and aesthetic.
Here’s a closer look at the new b3 interior fitting (drawer and pull-out) system, concrete countertop and other new additions to the company’s b1 and b3 kitchen systems.
New drawer and pull-out system: Created using bulthaup’s distinct design language, it offers a unique, unmistakable look and feel. It is a system of fully compatible elements, which sets new standards in terms of form, materials, precision fit and finish, and intelligent function. It is also extremely versatile; for example, it can be installed beneath the cooktop. The uniquely functional height staging of the frames gives the user greater flexibility when it comes to storage. The timelessness of the design opens up new possibilities when it comes to personalizing the kitchen space. High-quality materials and precision manufacturing ensure the system is robust and durable. The close alignment with the new bulthaup interior fitting system creates opportunities for a new dimension of sensuality in the design of kitchens.
Studies in concrete: bulthaup is famous for its 10 millimeter thick countertop. Now, the company is going a step further by experimenting with concrete. The initial results were displayed in Milan and New York – in the form of the world’s first 10 millimeter thick concrete worktop. This material has a unique architectural quality, and a color that blends perfectly into the room design. This is a further instance of a vision put into practice by means of technical precision: this innovation is the latest example of bulthaup setting new standards in craftsmanship and functionality. bulthaup is seeking to create its own production method in line with the latest research and manufacturing technologies. The decision to design the perfect concrete countertop is a conscious architectural statement.
A fresh take on oak: A novel approach to oak opens up new design possibilities and a new feeling of space. Rough-sawn oak has a back-to-nature appeal, the strong grain pattern lending the wood a vital radiance. The rough- sawn manufacturing method brings out the wood’s natural character and emphasizes its raw beauty. White rough-sawn oak is an interesting alternative to the pure-white kitchen. It has the versatility and open feel of a classic white-fronted design, but with a more organic structure that lends it a dynamic, distinct personality. The existing natural gray and black brown shades are now joined by colors such as bronze brown and black gray. Subtle use of this natural material can be harnessed to create attractive accents in kitchens of otherwise very smooth and serene appearance.
Enhanced function in the smallest spaces – bulthaup b1: The latest products in the bulthaup b1 range deliver on function while allowing individuality to flourish – even when space is at a premium. For greater versatility, slimline internal drawers (width: 45 cm) are now available as an alternative to the conventional 60 cm drawers. The tall units’ central shelf can be positioned at any height – allowing users to create a coat rack or a storage space for brooms and mops. The width of the tall units can be varied between 20 and 60 cm. And as washing machines can be integrated into base units, they no longer disrupt the living space. (Note: bulthaup b1 is not available in California)
