Car accidents are the leading cause of death for children in the United States. The number of car crashes caused by distracted driving is increasing. Oftentimes, when motorcycles are involved in a crash, serious injury and even death can result. With May being Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Injury Attorney K. Lindsay Rakers reminds the public that if distracted driving is eliminated, the number of crashes will be reduced.

St. May 27, 2012

It only takes one second to be distracted. If a driver permits himself to be distracted behind the wheel of a car, that one second can change not only his life but the lives of many others.

Our administrative agencies and legislators continue to try to improve the safety of our roadways. Of course, each roadway has a speed limit to reduce speed related car accidents. Many states now require the use of helmets while operating a motorcycle to reduce serious and/or fatal head injuries following a motorcycle or bicycle accident. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has adopted many regulations to try to ensure that our over-the-road truckers are safe in an attempt to reduce tractor trailer and truck crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began a national initiative to encourage motorists to share the road with motorcyclists. May is "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month".

It used to be that smoking was the "cool" thing for teenagers to try. shows that while there is still some belief in this regard, the numbers have tapered. Pursuant to the Center for Disease Control, there was a national TV ad campaign and school program geared towards younger kids regarding the hazards of smoking. While it is well-known that smoking is hazardous to one's health, when a teenager engaged in this social activity, it only harmed that teenager. Based upon the rising statistics of distracted driving as reported by the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Illinois Department of Transportation, especially distracted driving by teenagers, it appears that driving while texting is the latest trend among young people. Rakers, a St. Louis Missouri and Illinois accident injury attorney, states, "We must start educating our teenagers now of the dangers of distracted driving much like we did with the dangers of smoking. If we do it right, they will realize that it is not 'cool' to drive dangerously."

Pursuant to Facebook and Twitter posts, when people think of "driving under the influence," most associate it with drinking and driving or driving while under the influence of drugs. But people can also be "under the influence" by being distracted in other ways. DUI-related car crashes."

Rakers is currently a part of the EndDD (end distracted driving) campaign and speaks at local high schools to educate teens of the dangers of distracted driving. Lindsay Rakers encourages all motorists to not only talk to their children about safe driving but to also take a look at their own habits and make changes if needed.
