In recent studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic and Harvard University found that weight loss surgery was shown to be effective for patients struggling with diabetes. In two clinical trials, patients showed sharp improvement in blood sugar control and many were able to stop their medications when they received weight loss surgery. In these two trials the weight-loss surgery brought about dramatically greater improvement of blood sugar control in obese diabetics than in standard diabetes care.

Studies further found that even in extremely supervised regimens of diet, exercise and medications, these approaches failed to bring blood sugar under control after a year or more. Mazin Al Hakeem, “studies show us that while weight loss surgery cannot reverse complications from diabetes, it can and is being successfully used as a method for preventing effects of the disease from taking hold in the first place, so it should be considered as a valid treatment option.”
