Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota moves into the vanguard of online and mobile learning by incorporating the iPad into its online graduate programs in Project Management, Organizational Leadership, and Human Resource Management in May. Staff and faculty who have developed the project will present their innovative approach at the Campus Technology Forum, which takes place April 30 through May 2 in Long Beach, CA.
Each student will receive an iPad preloaded with programs and resources and will use it to access the online learning environment, electronic resources, content-creation tools, and student services. But rather than functioning as a static device for receiving information, the iPad is deeply integrated into the curriculum of the programs, incorporating both native applications and specially designed learning activities that will enable and enhance student-to-student, student-to-instructor, and student-to-content interaction.
The project, designed for the needs of adult learners, will help enhance the social, teaching, and cognitive aspects of online learning, especially the role of the instructor. It also promotes and extends the “anytime, anyplace” advantage of online learning. Professional-grade applications make it easy for students to incorporate their studies into their work lives, complementing the practical, career-focused approach of Saint Mary’s online programs.
In their presentation at the conference, titled “A Student-Centered Approach to Mobile Learning at Saint Mary's University,” Bob Andersen, Saint Mary’s Director of Instructional Technology, will be joined by Shilpa Patwardhan and Rob Schnieders of Deltak edu, an online higher education company that has partnered with Saint Mary’s to implement and manage newly created mobile learning platform. The session will take place Wednesday, May 2, from 1 to 2:20 PM.
