Aircare Solutions Group announced the availability today of a new business aviation safety product designed to help manage risk of Lithium battery operated appliance fires aboard business aircraft. Lithium battery operated appliances such as portable electronic devices, laptops and cell phones, typically have one or more batteries each comprised of multiple cells within each battery. Lithium battery fires occur when one of the cells goes into thermal runaway. This causes a violent chain react throughout the battery cells causing smoke, fire, and the emission of extreme temperatures. The FAA recommended procedure to extinguish a Lithium battery appliance fire is to knock down the flames with Halon and then cool the cells by dousing with water. Training. Containing the device after an incident allows the crew to focus on other tasks such as flying the plane, dealing with smoke, or preparing the aircraft and passengers for an emergency evacuation.
"We understand that there are other companies marketing fireproof bags to be used en lieu of following the proper extinguishing procedures.” Hayvaz continues, “As aviation emergency procedures training experts we feel this is irresponsible.
