Here are some pics of the first letters we have made so far and we are very happy and proud to say that we have written and decorated 10 original letters to send to injured children and youth in Libya! This wonderful project was started by Carol in Chicago, and there is a team of people ready to help distribute the postcards and letters in the Tunisian hospital where these brave young people are recuperating.
Many of the children were the victims of Gaddafi's missiles which were used to target civilian neighbourhoods for months during the dreadful siege of Misurata. Others are young men who fought to defend their towns and cities, many of whom suffered loss of limbs due to grad missiles or mines left behind by Gaddafi forces.
Our kitchen table has been covered with letters, glitter glue and markers all last night and today as the kids and their friends have been writing and decorating with great enthusiasm!
One of the children's friends wrote "I can't believe I actually have the opportunity to send you this letter." She was amazed to be able to do something so tangible - it felt like a miracle to her to be able to actually reach out and touch another young person so far away!
This project is beautiful on so many levels - to bring some awareness to kids here who thankfully don't know about the horrors of war, but to do so in a constructive way, while encouraging literacy, empathy and compassion, is an important aspect of the project.
Even more importantly, to give some hope, encouragement, support and love to the brave children and young people in Libya who have suffered such terrible ordeals in the last months...well that is a priceless gift! We are all the richer for this opportunity to show how much we are thinking about and praying for their quick recovery and happy future in free Libya that awaits them!
So please - take a moment and send one or two postcards to Libya - it will do your heart proud to know that even in a little way you made someone who needed it feel a little bit more loved and appreciated from across the world!
