The pentailed tree shrew, a species native to Malaysia, spends its nights sucking on the naturally fermented nectar from palms, which in human terms, effectively should render them drunk. However, it seems tree shrews metabolize food differently than humans, so while they consume a large quantity of alcohol, they do not become intoxicated, as far as researchers can tell.
If they shared humans' metabolic pathway, says researcher Frank Weins, this level of consumption would be equivalent to an average European woman drinking a glass of wine every hour for 12 hours. But upon studying the behavior of the shrews, scientists were unable to observe giddiness, lack of coordination, or other signs of drunkenness.
