Robyn Gardner missing in Aruba

August 12, 2011, Aruba]---The case of Robyn Gardner from Maryland, who was reported missing since August 2 while vacationing in Aruba, has striking parallels to that of Natalee Holloway who disappeared 6 years ago from the same town and beach on the tiny Island.

Eerie coincidence or sinister connection?

The 35-year-old dental assistant had reportedly gone on a 5 day trip to Aruba with a 50-year-old man she met online about a year ago. No one is sure if she even met this man face to face before agreeing to go vacationing with him.

Her boyfriend, Richard Forrester told ABC News that he and Gardner had a fight so she went off to Aruba with Gary Giordano, whom she referred to as her "Gay friend." He was the man she was having a virtual friendship with.

Giordano reportedly told the Aruban authorities that Gardner disappeared on a snorkeling trip. He said after returning to shore he realised she was nowhere to be found so he called for help. No one on the island remembered him asking for help.

Police reportedly detained him on August 6 as he was trying to fly out of Aruba. However, he has not been charged with any crime and was held only "as a person of interest."

According to The Daily Beast, Giordano has a checkered past and several women have accused him of being a violent man with a raging temper. One woman he dated allegedly took out a restraining order against him and his wife divorced him in 2008 after alleged abuse.

Forrester said his girlfriend obsessed over her hair and make-up and was not the outdoorsy, snorkeling type. He said he couldn't get her to even put her head under water when they went on vacations.

He said she had sent him frequent text messages from Aruba early in her trip but that they tapered off as the days went by. Her last message which was via Facebook, said, "it sucks...really." Boyfriend Forrester said he knew something was 'off.'

Gardner has been missing for 10 days now and the search for her was called off.

Another case bares some eerie similarities. 18-year-old Natalee Holloway disappeared from that same town and beach in Aruba in 2005 while on a class trip. She has never been found and no one was ever charged in her disappearance.

Joran Van Der Sloot , who was a suspect in her case, is currently behind bars for the alleged murder of another young woman.

UPDATE: 8.13.11

The search for Gardner has reportedly extended Stateside. According to CNN, the FBI is currently searching Giordano's residence in the U.S. for any clues that might shed some light on what happened to her. They are going through his computer in the hopes of finding some connection.

Meanwhile, the Aruban authorities have found some slippers and clothes on the beach where the 35-year-old dental assistant was last seen.

No word yet on whether they belonged to the missing woman.
