MUMBAI: In what is a major ‘catch’ for the Mumbai police, absconding gangster Santosh Shetty alias Anna, wanted in numerous cases consisting of contract killing, extortion, drug peddling etc was arrested in a beer bar in Bangkok on Thursday, August 11, 2011, after he got into a altercation with some businessmen and brought down to Mumbai, inform police sources.
It may be noted that Shetty was a close aide of the deadly don Chhota Rajan. He, however, parted ways with his mentor and his gang in 2004 due to some tussle. He declared war on the former vowing to destroy his criminal empire and replace it with his very own.
Shetty, then went on to set-up his own outfit naming it SS Syndicate. After which he had been involved actively in various nefarious activities such as extortion, kidnapping, smuggling and contract-killing, informed a top crime branch official.
As of date Shetty is an accused in three murder cases. The first case is that of the murder of Farheed Tanasha a henchman of gangster Chhota Rajan in 2009. Another case is that of the killing of the Shahid Azmi, a lawyer who was representing Fhaim Ansari, an accused in the November 2008 Mumbai serial train blasts. The third case is that of the killing of gangster Bharat Nepali in a Bangkok hotel in October 2010.
Santosh Shetty has also been on the “most wanted” list of Interpol because of crimes he had committed in Mumbai. His arrest now would be massive blow for the underworld. This is due to the fact that of late, several of Chhota Rajan's minions have made an exodus into Shetty’s gang, making the latter one of the most powerful gang in Mumbai city.
Despite being an underworld gangster for more than 20 years, Shetty came into the limelight only after the killings of Tanasha. Meanwhile, Shetty was produced before a local court today, Friday August 12, and as per court orders has now been remanded to police custody till August 17.
