In a revolution of sorts in the medical field, a panel of Turkish surgeons successfully transplanted a new uterus into a 21 year old woman after taking it from a donor. The operation considered as the first womb transplantation in the world, lasted for seven hours.
Turkish surgeons conducted this uterus transplantation at the Akdeniz University located in the southern Mediterranean province of Antalya. As per a chalked out plan, the surgeons will be removing the womb later once the patient gives birth to a baby.
The above information was furnished by Prof. Israfil Kurtcephe, Rector of the Akdeniz University at a news conference held in Turkey on Tuesday, August 10, 2011.
Meanwhile the team Head and Associate Professor Omer Ozkan of the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery informed that they were very “glad to find a cure for the patient's desire to be a mother. We hope that we can see her giving birth to the baby," he added.
