Zimbabwe’s security forces are running a brutal torture camp in the country’s diamond-rich Marange fields, BBC Panorama finds.
The findings are based on interviews with recent victims who, under condition of anonymity, told of horrendous beatings and sexual violence in a torture camp locally known as “Diamond Base.”
The report comes amid the European Union reconsideration of earlier bans on importing diamond from Zimbabwe.
The horror stories coming out of Zimbabwe is no longer news, but the latest revelations are so shocking that the world needs to know.
Here are but a few of the most horrific stories coming out:
--It is a place where many workers are no longer capable of working because they have been so severely and brutally beaten, according to one victim.
--Some workers are whipped 40 times in the morning, 40 times in the afternoon, and 40 times in the evening and that the soldiers sometimes use logs and stones to beat the workers’ ankles, making some of them unable to walk.
--Some workers who are held as prisoners are sometimes handcuffed and then the soldiers unleash dogs so that the prisoners are bitten.
--Women are released more quickly, according to the witnesses, but many of them after being raped. In once instance, a dog was unleashed on a woman and her breast was bitten, which probably killed her.
--Some prisoner workers were tortured by mock-drowning them and whipped on their genitals, according a former member of the paramilitary police unit who participated in torture.
The mining field has been operating for three years and the camp is reportedly used to torture both prisoners and civilians. The company chief that operates the field is said to be a close friend of Robert Mugabe, the President of Zimbabwe.
