It's a controversy I have been following for 3 months. It involves a billboard sign in South Africa that reads
‘Jesus: Prophet of Islam’
The billboard is causing uproar in Australia, The Sydney Morning Herald reported Monday, May 30. Culminating in vandalism and calls by christians leaders to take it down?
“The campaign organizers profess the billboard advertisements are to inform,” said Bishop Julian Porteous, from the Archdiocese of Sydney.“But in effect they have provoked a response reflected in the vandalism we saw at the weekend.”
“In Australia with its Christian heritage a billboard carrying the statement `Jesus A prophet of Islam’ is provocative and offensive to Christians,” said Bishop Porteous.
The Christian leader called for removing the billboards.
“For the sake of preserving social harmony and respect between major world religions these billboards should be withdrawn, along with others which carry messages directly offensive to Christians.” At the same time, Organizers have defended the campaign, saying the billboards have received a positive response from Christians.
In the USA, some Muslims wanted to also run that ad, but the advertising firm said they could not allow it. Some fear Christians would riot in the street if such a billboard was posted here. The savage ad brutal attacks of 9-11-2001 are still very visible in the minds of people, particularly Christians - who see Islam as a great evil in the world.
In some ways I agree, since Muslim here don't really want to condemn the 9-11 attacks. On that day, Muslims in Afghanistan and Palestine danced in the street and shouted Allah Akbar, when they found out Islamic extremists launch an attack against the Pentagon, and world trade center. Since then Christians have been very critical of Islamic teachings that seem to endorse the concept of Jihad.
Today Christians get pissed off when you say stuff like Jesus - is a prophet in Islam , who is mentioned in Quran.
What do you think about the billboard? Would you want it in your community? Why or why not? Post your comments here!
