Big League Softball World Series

Representing Asia-Pacific, the Philippine Women Softball Team is making its home country proud by grabbing two more wins in the Big League Softball World Series by defeating Italy’s EMEA, 13-0, and Michigan, 4-1 yesterday. The team now holds the solo lead in tournament being held in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Filipina pitcher Rizza Bernardino struck out six batters in three innings in the last win. The Filipino players made four runs in the first inning before going to a seven-run binge in the third to defeat Italy. Team Phil has also previously defeated Alice, Texas (Southwest), 10-0, and Canada, 7-0, in the team’s doubleheader Thursday.

Bernardino turned the pitching duties to an impressive Michelle Lentija in the fourth. She then preserved a perfect game for the team with a no-walk, no-hit stint by Italy. She finished off the game with an amazing homerun for the team.

Philippine team coach Ana Santiago is confident going to the finals, “The girls are ready (to vie for the crown). They want to prove that they have what it takes to beat the best in the world.”

Team Phl now leads the 10-team field with a 4-0 card, with an amazing 34-1 run difference. The Filipinas are set to go against the other unbeaten powerhouse Kalamazoo, tomorrow.

Vying for the crown were the five United States Regional Champions, the Canadian national champions, the Latin American champs, the EMEA champions (Europe, Middle East & Africa), as well as the representatives from the Asia-Pacific region and the host team, Michigan District 2.

The championship game will be played on Wednesday Night at 5 p.m. and will be seen LIVE on ESPN 2. The awards banquet is set to be held on Tuesday, August 9. The Parade of Champions, honoring all series participants, will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10.
