"We never would have thought that he would shoot to kill!"
So spoke resident of Tripoli 'Lavista' when we talked on Facebook chat recently. She was, of course, referring to Gaddafi. But those early days of the Arab Spring now seem like a lifetime ago.
I remember in fact like yesterday the outrage and indignation with which Mohammed Nabbous implored the world to help - as we first saw him on the You Tube video he made from the roof of a building as he attempted to tell the world about how Gaddafi's army was using heavy artillery to shoot at people from helicopters. I shared the video here, in an effort to tell the rest of the world something that might help.
A week later Lavista, a citizen journalist on this site popped up out of nowhere one dinner hour, and posted the most horrifying pic I have to this day ever witnessed. The one where the little boy was dying in his mother's arms. He had gone to buy a loaf of bread and had been shot by Gaddafi's men. I remember the feeling of complete and utter horror take over my body as I looked at that pic and the others that Lavista was posting....what on earth...no who on earth would do such things?
Well since then we have learned that in fact, there are quite afew people who would and will and have done such things. Like, for example, the Deadly Arab Dictators.
The Arab Dictators would, and they could, and they have done so. The likes of Gaddafi, and Assad. Mubarek. The Bahrain Crown Prince. These men seem to share one thing in common and that is a complete disregard for human life. Bahrain's little uprising was so completely and cruelly crushed they locked up the entire hospital staff in order to stop the injured from being helped. Then they threw away the key. But not before they had beated a doctor to within an inch of his life.
The complete and utter disregard for human life is staggering. We would take more heed and feel more regret for killing an ant colony in our garden than these men seem to feel in the killing of thousands of innocent humans.
The Dictators have ordered their soldiers to shoot people...there have been many defected soldiers whom can attest to the orders. But the question isn't...why? Not why did they do it - we can all figure that much out - they didn't want to give up their power! No the real question is - why are they capable of doing that? How and why do these men all share the brutality necessary to give such orders? Surely priviledge and power alone do not create monsters such as these? Or do they? "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" as the saying goes...or were these men already power-hungry monsters to begin with? Isn't that how they got the power in the first place? It's the chicken/egg thing again...but in this case it is more...which came first... the monster, or the devil himself?
