A ninth grader by the name of TyQuan Brantley, a student of Lamar High School, collapsed after football practice and was later pronounced dead

Sudden deaths really leave one speechless and heartbroken and the severity of the situation is amplified when the sudden death involves a young person. A tragic incident took place in South Carolina on Saturday, as a seemingly fine teenager just collapsed after football practice. The young boy who died was a 14-year-old by the name of TyQuan Brantley, and he was a student of ninth grade at Lamar High School.

TyQuan Brantley was a bright young student, who also showed great talent in the field of football. It had been a short while since he had gotten selected for the Lamar High School’s football team, but he had shown great skill for the sport already and he practiced regularly.

While returning from football practice on Saturday afternoon, TyQuan Brantley just collapsed and he was later pronounced dead. As soon as he collapsed, the coaches called 911 and an ambulance was called to the scene. TyQuan was rushed to the hospital and over there doctors tried their best to save his life. Despite all best efforts, TyQuan Brantley could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.

According to the district officials, all the players were given water breaks during football games and practices. In fact, all the students who participate in marching bands and games are encouraged to take a five minute hydration break after 25 minutes of practice. Water was also easily accessible to TyQuan Brantley on the day that he died, ruling out the possibility of dehydration. "We are heartbroken at this terrible tragedy," said Dr. Rainey Knight, superintendent of the school district. "Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to TeQuan's family, classmates, and coaches."

It is still not clear what caused TyQuan Brantley’s death. According to reports, he had been practicing in the field for around one hour and fifteen minutes and was just returning home when the death occurred. One point to be noted here is that TyQuan was not wearing any protective gear while he was practicing that day, so that might have some role to play in his sudden death. As of now, nothing can be said for sure that what caused the 14-year-old’s death, as the real cause will emerge after the autopsy is performed on Monday or Tuesday.

Sadly some are not surprised when this happens, and on average 3-4 young men will collapse during or shortly after practice this year to never rise again. I authored a book titled Factors Unknown: The tragedy that put a coach and football on trial. www.factorsunknown.com
The first part covers the tragedy that took the life of Max Gilpin, a 15 year old Louisville KY football player in Aug of 2008. The rest of the book details the only coach (Jason Stinson PRPHS) to ever be criminally charged and put on trial for a player's death. I caution the media and the general public not to jump to conclusions until all of the facts have an opportunity to come out. The situation in Louisville started much like this one, but within a few days it turned into something no one had ever seen before. At the end of it all it was learned that almost everything that Stinson was accused of was false and did not happen.
I am very interested to see if this was heat related, a heart defect, or even perhaps Sickle Cell Trait. Regardless the cause, changes need to be made. There are medical exams that can expose children who are more susceptible to heat stroke, as well as heart issues and SCT. Why aren't these types of exams being carried out? The answer is probably money. Please visit our fan page at Facebook (Factors Unknown) to see some of the heatstroke awareness work we are currently involved in.
