South African parolees might be wearing electronic bracelets soon, this is an initiative that is set to be piloted on offenders serving life sentences and currently considered for placement on parole, said the Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa Nqakula.
This electronic tagging is expected to ease overcrowding of prisoners and also to monitor capacity of parolees.
“We are looking at the end of the year to start piloting this” the departmental spokesperson Mr Sonwabo Mbananga told Sapa following a directive by Constitutional Court with respect to lifers sentenced before 1 March 1994. Apparently two visibility studies have already been and the department has already looked at how it was done in other countries.
