Somalia is 98.5% Muslim. Brief history: During the 70's a repressive socialist regime ruled somalia. Efforts from both north and south somalia, with ethiopia's help ousted the government. A president was selected, not elected, and due to disputing factions who did not recognize him, the country erupted into Civil war. This profoundly disrupted agriculture and food distribution. A famine that left 300000 dead, continued violence, and the humanitarian disaster motivated the United States to create a secure environment in Southern Somalia from which to conduct humanitarian operations, but the Somalian people didn't want them there. The TFG (transitional federal government) is the currently internationally recognized federal government of Somalia, but it doesnt control most of the country and doesn't have the support of the people, and so can is rightly be considered not legitimate, but is probably Somalias only chance at getting for war crimes tried. In 2006, the Islamic Courts Union (ICU), an Islamist org, assumed control of much of the southern part of the country and promptly imposed Shari'a law. The Transitional Federal Government sought to reestablish its authority, and, with the assistance of Ethiopian troops, African Union peacekeepers and air support by the US, managed to drive out the rival ICU and solidify its rule.
