Five Amish Farmers Killed In Upstate New York

Five Amish farmers have been killed and ten others injured in a road traffic accident in a rural area of New York. A car pulled out at speed to overtake a tractor crashing into a van carrying a group of Amish farmers.

The dead were all in the van which was knocked under the tractor by the car. The accident was in the Finger Lakes area of New York.

The car driver, who is not Amish and from Penn Yan, only required minor injury treatment at the hospital and was not kept in hospital. He is now being questioned by police. The police have already said that the accident took place in a no overtaking area of highway between soya bean fields, 40 miles South West of Rochester.

It is thought that at least one married couple was among the dead Amish farmers. The community that the farmers come from is said to be devastated. The group of Amish were from Steuben County. The group was on a trip to visit other farms on an excursion organized by Cornell University to learn techniques compatible with their religion.

New York State has seen an increase in Amish communities in the last few years. ten new Amish settlements have been set up in the last year alone. There are now a total of around 13,000 Amish living in New York
