AJDABIYA, Libya — Late Friday night in Brega, and a light mobile force of freedom fighters successfully breached Gaddafi defenses in a daring reconaissance raid before pulling back to plan for for an offensive Saturday.
Mohammed Zawi, the military spokesman for the resistance told AFP that a group of around 50 rebels were able to infiltrate the oil refinery town of Brega on Saturday, where lay a force of Gaddafi loyalists some 3,000 strong.
"A group of around 50 reconnas entered the town from the north, then pulled back four kilometres (2.5 miles) before midnight (2200 GMT), Zawi said.
The probing raid on the front line between the rebel-held east and the mainly government-held west came some 32 hours after the rebel command launched a three-pronged attack against Colonel Moamer Kadhafi's forces, who were thought to have numbered around 3,000." AFP
Initial reports stated that the town was completely free of Gaddafi forces, which seemed a little too easy at first. It was. The advancing team of freedom fighters found enormous trenches dug around the city filled with flammable chemicals by retreating loyalists. Now their advance is 'slow but sure' as the Libyan citizens-turned-warriors sustain heavy losses Saturday with 12 dead and many wounded in the fight for Brega as they approach from the east and south.
Gaddafi meanwhile aired a radio broadcast at Zawiyah Saturday, stating that he would never leave Libya, home of his ancestors, and that it was a joke to think he ever would, leaving the resistance with only on option if they truly want the maddog to leave - they are going to have to carry him out in a box.
The liberation drive on the city of Brega comes a day after thirty countries gathered in Istanbul to recognize the TNC, a morale-boosting and encouraging message from major world powers which will also enable much-needed funds to flow into the resistance's coffers.
Brega is the site of a massive oil refinery and storage facilities, and will provide fuel as well as income for the resistance. Plans are already underway for a huge celebration tonight in Benghazi, capital of the Libyan resistance.
