Air Force officials reported Thursday that three Air Force officers fell asleep while overseeing an electronic component that contained old launch codes for intercontinental nuclear ballistic missles.

According to the Air Force the launch codes had been deactivated prior to the incident, leaving little threat, though it was still a violation of military protocol and prompted an investigation.

Acknolwedging a violation of Air Force procedure, the officals also reported that this is the fourth incident in the past year involving the secure handling of components related to US nuclear weapons.
