The Supreme Court has halted the opening of the last secret vault of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple in Kerala – apparently, the reported hiss of serpents has scared the treasure hunters. Already over one lakh crores of rupees worth of gold, silver and precious stones have been unearthed from the five secret vaults – the last and No. 6 is yet to be opened. That has been suspended by the Supreme Court.
It is believed that a trap door behind the entrance to this secret chamber opens out into the Arabian Sea. A century earlier one of the persons connected with the royal family of Travancore had tried to open it but had to beat a hasty retreat and abandon the project when he heard terrible hissing noises from behind the closed doors.
Was it the hissing of the Arabian Sea or the hissing of deadly serpents? Hindu mythology says that secret treasures are guarded by one Yaksha who keeps serpents for company.
