Tribute to YS Rajasekhara Reddy

Hyderabad, July., 8: Several Congress leaders here on Friday paid rich tributes to former chief minister late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy at his statue at Panjagutta crossroads on the occasion of his 62nd birth anniversary.

The Chief Minister, Mr N Kiran Kumar Reddy, garlanded the YSR statue and recalled his services to the people of the State. On the occasion, the Chief Minister also distributed cheques to women belonging to four DWACRA groups and recalled the efforts of late YSR for empowerment of women and uplift of downtrodden sections.

The former chief minister, Mr K Rosaiah, the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr C. Damodar Rajanarasimha, the ministers, Mr Danam Nagender, Mr M. Mukesh Goud, Mr Vatti Vasanth Kumar and Mr Dharmana Prasada Rao, the PCC president, Mr Botcha Satyanarayana were among those who paid tributes to late YSR.

Today is the birth anniversary of the late Chief Minister Dr. Y S Rajasekhara Reddy who was loved as a friend of the farmers, an un unrelenting leader who took on to him the problems of the people. Andhra Headlines is reminiscing the services of who was taken away by a cruel fate in a helicopter crash.

Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasehara Reddy was born to Raja Reddy and Jayamma on July 8, 1949 in Pulivendula of Kadapa district. As his father was a contractor in Bellari, the early education of YSR was in the St. Johnson school there.

YSR who studied in the Vijayawada Loyola College, later graduated in Medicine in the Gulbarga University. Later he worked as House Surgeon in the SWIMS in Tirupati. YSR who was attracted to politics since his student days, practiced as a physician for some time. He turned to fulltime politics later. He was elected to the Pulivendula Assembly seat for six times and Kadapa Lok Sabha seat for four times. He worked as the state minister for medical and health, rural development and education between 1980 and 83. He has strengthened the Congress party as the President of the PCC and functioned effectively as the Congress Legislature Party leader. He has assumed several important positions as the CLP leader.

He undertook a marathon and arduous Padayatra (mission on foot) through the length and breadth of the state and brought the Congress which was in a dormant state to power, defeating the strong TDP. He has naturally become the Chief Minister of the state. During his rule, he has implemented several welfare schemes like free power to the farmers, Indiramma Houses and Arogya Sri, free health insurance scheme to the poor. He had a special soft corner for the farming a community which was badly neglected till then. Under his dynamic leadership, the Congress once again stormed into power in the 2009 elections and he created a record as a Chief Minister for two consecutive terms.

On that fateful day, September 2, 2009, YSR set out to Chittoor district in a helicopter to participate in the Racha Banda programme and had not returned hence. His helicopter met with a ghastly accident due to inclement whether and crashed near Pavurala Gutta in the dense Nallamala forests. All the co-passengers of the helicopter have also perished along with YSR.
