Don't SMS And Drive

Citizens and residents of Kuwait will soon be able to benefit from a public visa and permit SMS reminder system, which has been launched by the Ministry of Interior this month.

'Phase One' of the project will allow citizens and other residents to receive SMS messages to their mobile phones, providing information and reminders related to passport renewals and residency permits. They will also receive SMS notifications of vehicle registration expiration, expired driver's licenses, traffic fines and tickets, new individual nationality papers and election registration reminders.

Any SMS reminder will be sent early to give people plenty of time to react to the notification. Reminders on vehicle registration will be sent seven days prior to expiry. In case of residence permit and visa renewal notification, the text message will be sent 15 days before the expiration date. After first notification, a reminder will be sent regularly. Once a year, citizens will be reminded to register on the voters' register and renew their citizenship certificates.

The first phase messages will be transmitted through the Viva Telecom Company, with the two other companies beginning to transmit such messages at a later date.
