THE MODEST TILAPIA: STANDOUT FISH
Olongapo City, Philippines
Live and jumping tilapias on the market fish stalls attract and amuse customers anywhere in the country thus, become the “standout stock” during this year’s “fish kills emergency”. Being the very visible jumping fish variety, its demand and price remains high at 80-90 pesos per kilogram in public markets or even higher in mall supermarkets. The fisk kills in May this year became a “scare” which compelled people of not eating fish particularly “milkfish” or “bangus”.
Governor Vilma Santos-Recto of Batangas led local government executives to eat bangus and tilapia during a party in previous weeks in order to win back people’s appetite and confidence to eat fish once again, to restore and strengthen the local fish industry. The initiative of the Batangas lady governor was a very laudable example for other local government officials to replicate in their own respective areas of jurisdiction and responsibility.
