The Departments of Homeland Security, Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, have been tapped to lead a coordinated initiative, primarily geared to combat immigration services scams, by targeting unscrupulous persons who prey on immigrant communities, ‘making promises they do not keep and charging for services they are not qualified to provide,” usnewslasvegas.com said.
Dozens of cases, perpetrated by so called ‘notarios’ or people who engaged themselves in scams involving the unauthorized practice of the immigration law, have been investigated by the Justice Department, which after convictions-with sentences of up to eight years in prison-had restituted an amount reaching more than $1.8 million.
Immigration and Custom Enforcement Director John Morton said, “Notarios and other illegal immigration service providers take advantage of unsuspecting immigrants trying to navigate the immigration system,” that compelled them to continue to work with federal, state and local partners to combat ‘notario’ fraud and protect the integrity of the legal immigration system.
There were three main pillars the new initiative would try to contemplate on; enforcement, education and continued collaboration, to stop the scams and prosecute those responsible; educate the immigrants about these scams and how to avoid them; inform immigrants about the legal immigration process and where to find legitimate legal advice and representation.
