The first dog in the world to be fitted with four set of bionic legs is Naki’o. Naki’o is reportedly the world’s first dog to be fitted with four bionic legs. He gets along on them super well, and is able to run, jump, and even swim.
The animal lost all its limbs after the owners abandoned it along with its siblings. The animal was then barely 5 weeks old.
Naki’o and the rest of his litter were abandoned by a family fleeing their foreclosed home. During the harsh Nebraskan winter, he stepped into an icy puddle in the basement and got his four paws stuck in freezing water. With severe frostbite, Naki’o and his brothers and sisters were transported to an animal rescue center.
Naki’o seems to have adjusted to its new paws perfectly. The plight of the animal touched vet technicianTomlinson who decided to help. She subsequently organized an appeal for funds to raise the money for Naki’o to regain its two hind legs. After the procedure the Orthopets were so impressed with the outcome that they decided to fit two more bionic legs for free.
The prosthetics were designed and fitted in a pioneering procedure by Martin Kaufmann, founder of Orthopets.
Naki’o adapted quickly, and soon learned how to use the devices. Now, Naki'o is able to run, jump and play just like other dogs, thanks to the second chance his new set of legs have given him.
