WikiLeaks' cables reveal US twists Haiti's arm for its own interests

WikiLeaks released 250,000 diplomatic cables to The New York Times Sunday

Recently released diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks show how much pressure Washington is giving to Port-au-Prince that seem to ruin the country's road to recovery after the 12 January 2010 earthquake.

An Al Jazeera report in the attached YouTube video says the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere was bullied to American pressure. Several US companies are profiting from it since the January 2010 quake, the cables said.

The US Embassy and contractors for clothing giants like Levis Strauss and Hanes signaled displeasure at Haiti's plan to increase the minimum wage for factory workers to $5 minimum wage per day but American officials advised Haitian government that it "did not take economic reality into account," suggesting $3 per day instead.

The secret spiller also revealed that Venezuela—a US enemy—offered Haiti crude oil on relaxed, lucrative terms but the cables alleged that energy companies and Washington twisted the arm of Haiti to prevent the deal from going through.

The cables also suggested to what extent the US is controlling the country. During a visit by Sec. Hillary Clinton, she was described to have repetitively attempted to talk Preval and Bellerive to set up state-run refugee camps, which the Haiti government thought was risky or could lead to protests.

In another YouTube video by Democracy Now, Kim Ives of Haiti Liberté said that the height of arrogance is "when an ambassador is pushing around a president of a country telling them what to do, and they don't understand this, they don't understand that."

There are many more interesting revelations such as multi-million dollar government housing contracts that US companies were alleged to have profited from according to the report of WSWS.

Details of this report here.

this is disgusting if true - how is it that evil people always seem to make profit from other's distress? I am talking about big business - I do not think Hillary Clinton is evil, nor do I think America is 'evil' per-se but it seems that every country has this same issue of corruption and those with power abusing it - why is mankind so bloody awful?

That is human unkind, Michelle. It has been written in history. Sadly, this is not the first time that the US has been accused of such. The Middle East is a perfect example. Thanks.

Of course the U.S. and most everyone else supported the Duvalier clan of thugs for decades. The international community also accepted elections that were flawed and then rerigged the results so as to have who they thought might be the most appealing presidential candidate in the runoff. The rapper Martelly admires DuValier! This is all designed to support the small Haitian elite who have good connections with international capital. Although Martelly may be the most popular Aristide's party that has most support from the poor was not allowed to run and turnout for the final presidential vote was around fifteen per cent as I recall.

I concur, North. US surely knows how to play the game. I saw several documentaries. Countries rich in oil like Iraq are poor even though they have vast resources. Countries that import from them like the US are the ones getting rich. Thanks.

Sure, Tita Susan. WikiLeaks shows hard evidence. Diplomats cannot deny that. Thanks.

Sometimes the US diplomats stumble over their own hubris. While Venezuela and Hugo Chavez speak against the US, perhaps understandable given the assassination attempts, he still sells the majority of that country's oil to them. He also maintains a chain of gas stations in the US.

Thanks for the comment, Ms. B. I think the enemies of US were painted a bad image by the Western Press. Many of them do good.

This is a bad situation and our current administration needs to be changed. However, they did a good thing preventing Haiti from falling prey to what Venezuela was really trying to do with its Socialism/Communism goals. Venezuela's leader is not just a USA enemy but the enemy of all South American and Latin American countries. There is a much bigger picture going on here.

Rated up; not sure the software credited it today.
