A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale with epicenter in the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday shook northern Japan, triggered a tsunami warning and hit several provinces, which have no records of damage.

The earthquake struck at 6:51 a.m. local time Thursday (18h51 Wednesday of GMT) with epicenter at 50 kilometers to the east coast of the province of Iwate, northern Japan at a depth of 20 km, and caused an alert tsunami to Iwate which was withdrawn after half an hour.

The Shinkansen bullet train, or was temporarily paralyzed in the affected region, but then could again operate as two nuclear plants in the area reported no incidents.

The quake was clearly felt in the provinces north of Aomori, Iwate, Akita, Yamagata, Fukushima and Hokkaido, said the Meteorological Agency.
