An interesting review article in the May 2011 edition of ‘The Australasian Journal of Dermatology’ entitled ‘Role of Genetics and Sex Steroid Hormones in Male Androgenetic Alopecia and Female PatternLoss: An Update of What We Know’ authored by Leona Yip, Nick Rufaut and Rod Sinclair.
Points of note include:
- Male androgenetic alopecia (MAGA) and female pattern hair loss (FPHL) are identical in histological terms but are separate clinical entities. Differences include rates of prevalence, hair loss pattern and peak ages.
- MAGA spares the occipital area of the scalp even in severe cases.
- In FPHL complete areas of baldness are rare.
- The androgen dependency of MAGA is not reflected in FPHL.
- MAGA and FPHL both result in hair follicle miniaturisation and hair follicle cycling alteration.
- In MAGA and FPHL the growth (anagen) phase is shortened dramatically and the telogen phase remains the same or is lengthened. The telogen follicle proportion also goes up from 5-10% to 15-20%.
- Dihydrotestostetone (DHT) is thought to be the key androgen in the induction of MAGA.
