In Atlanta, the Southeast’s Japanese Animation Convention or Anime Weekend Atlanta (AWA) will be held between 20 September to 2 October, 2011 at the Atlanta Waverly Hotel and Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, . The convention has been held since 1995.
AWA also offers a video room for viewing of Japanese cartoons from new releases and titles going back to the 1960's, a dealer's room with retailers selling Japanese anime and manga merchandise including videos, audio CDs, toys, and artwork as well as hands-on workshops, panel discussions with industry professionals on various topics including the current trends in Japan and how they will affect the United States. Attendees in costumes can enter their costume contest for prizes.
Meanwhile, to get a taste of what we have to look forward to, anime enthusiasts in Middlesbrough, England held their weekend NemaCon event featuring Manga and Anime, at Middlesbrough Town Hall due to the enormous success of it’s first weekend last year.
In addition to their Cosplay Masquerade and skit contest, the Middlesbrough NemaCon offers everything from merchandise tables in the dealer area, art classes that show you how to draw the anime way, their computer game lounge, screening room and seminars on Japanese Culture and traditions, and even a Pub Quiz. There’s also a Café to discuss and relax after a fun-filled day.
Confirmed guests and traders included Sonia Leong, DestinyBlue, Chie Kutsowada, Akemi Solloway and Jenika Ioffreda.
Many of the NemaCon Cosplay enthusiasts this year showed up in their Lolita costumes including Jordan Ward, 16, second from right, who waited on a couch to go on the catwalk dressed as a Sweet Lolita, with other enthusiasts dressed as Lolitas.
In her bright blonde wig, sailor costume and huge red bow, Cosplay enthusiast Katie Beckett, age 15, dressed up as Super Sailor Moon, while Natasha Tyler alias costume designer and maker Missy Tetra, waits to go on the catwalk dressed as Chi in her European copper colored costume and white wig.
But it wasn’t all about Lolitas, dressed as a pink bunny in a pink jacket and blue vest, equipped with her pink bunny toy, Alex Lawson, 20, posed on stage, while another enthusiast came dressed as Super Mario!See my colorful slideshow of people mentioned here.
