Operation Malaysia

Petaling Jaya, Malaysia - 17 June 2011

The deadline issued by hacking group Anonymous has passed. Dubbed “Operation Malaysia”, the group threatened to attack the Malaysian Government portal at 1930 hrs GMT Wednesday (3:30am on Thursday in Malaysia).

Anonymous said it was acting against acts of censorship by the Malaysian Government, citing the recent decision to block filesharing sites in Malaysia. The threat was posted on a website.

While many websites including Malaysian Government sites were hacked, it has been reported that no serious damage was done. All websites that were hacked are expected to be operating again without much delay.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Government announced they will not back down from their decision to block filesharing sites, insisting it wasn't an act of censoring the Internet.

Writer's comment: When will people learn that acts of terrorism do not change Government policies? These acts only harm the innocent. Luckily for Malaysians, the hacking did not cause any serious problems.

I think it was more a publicity stunt than a serious threat.
