Last week, 18 year old Tavulares took his fascination with the movie "Natural Born Killers" one step too far when he leaned across his bed and strangled his girlfriend to death. Lauren Aljubouri, also 18, was dead within minutes.
Tavulares and Aljubouri had known each other since the second grade, and had been dating on and off since the sixth. When Aljubouri came home Friday night, they began watching "Natural Born Killers," a movie about a pair of psychopathic, homicidal lovers, which Tavulares admitted to having watching as many as 20 times previously. Halfway through the film, the couple decided to turn in for the night. Tavulares then inexplicably reached over and began to strangle Aljubouri. After realizing what he had done, he attempted to resuscitate her, but it was too late.
"I just never dreamed this could happen to my daughter and that he would ever hurt her like this in a million years," said Aljubouri's mother, Debbie. The couple had been living in an appartment near University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where Aljubouri was to begin studies in fine arts in the fall. She graduated with honors from her high school, and "had so much promise in the future, and it’s such a tragic loss," said Debbie Aljubouri.
According to police, who arrived at the apartment at around 3 a.m. Friday morning, Tavulares answered the door and admitted to the crime without being prompted.
“I can’t believe it. I did it,” he told police officers
Tavulares is being charged with first degree reckless homicide, and faces up to 60 years in prison.
