Sky sources say helicopters are firing on protesters as authorities attempt to clear the crowds camped out on Pearl square. The security operation comes a day after the king declared martial law as the government attempts to quell the uprising by the island's Shi'ite Muslim majority. There are also reports that a hospital where the injured are being taken has been attacked. Demonstrators have retaliated by throwing petrol bombs at police who have been firing rounds of teargas as they advance towards them. On Tuesday a Bahraini policeman was among two men killed in new clashes with protesters as the king declared martial law. A three-month state of emergency has been imposed and the Foreign Office has advised Britons to leave the kingdom when it is safe to do so, unless they have a "pressing reason to remain".
