A three-day polio vaccination campaign will start in Orakzai Agency later this month to immunize young children of the terror-affected area against polio. Local journalist Abdul Munaim Khan of Hangu District reports that vaccination teams have been formulated by the health department for this campaign.
According to Munaim Khan, health department working in Orakzai Agency had a meeting, supervised by Political Agent Riyaz Khan Mehsud, on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at the Orakzai Agency Headquarters in Hangu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to discuss various aspects of the campaign. Dr.Wazir, Agency Surgeon Orakzai, gave a briefing to the participants, telling that 111 mobile vaccination teams, 37 fixed teams, and 7 transit teams have been organized for running the vaccination campaign throughout the Lower Orakzai Agency.
The campaign, which will run from June 13 – 15, 2011, aims at vaccinating some 40, 000 children under 5 years of age. Mobile vaccination teams organized for this purpose will go door-to-door to vaccinate the children; fixed teams will vaccinate kids brought to them by parents/guardians; and transit teams will serve the same purpose at transit points – vaccinating kids traveling with parents/guardians.
Political Administration of Orakzai Agency will monitor the campaigns activities and performance of the vaccination teams. Political Agent Riyaz Khan Mehsud has issued strict directives regarding efficient fulfillment of the duty assigned to the vaccination teams. He said no negligence or slackness will be tolerated in this matter. He has also assured that tribal elders and community members will cooperate fully in this vaccination campaign aiming at saving children from potential disability by polio.
