The Ohio State football program is one of the most prestigious in the country and has gone on to achieve a national title thanks to their coach Jim Tressel. Sadly for the team, Tressel is not going to be the coach anymore as he resigned a few hours ago through a typewritten resignation letter from his office at Ohio State. Tressel has been very candid about why he is resigning, claiming its for the good of the school and the community but he enclosed the letter with a personal note just above his signature saying: “We know that God has a plan for us and we will be fine," he wrote, referring to himself and his wife, Ellen. "We will be Buckeyes forever." The fans of the coach are heartbroken and the team is experiencing the lowest of spirits, seeing the coach walk away.
Ohio State has already announced that Luke Fickell, assistant coach to Tressel, will be taking over as the acting coach for the 2011 session and that the team will have a new coach by next year who will be permanent.
The resignation of Tressel came amidst the tide of allegations against him and his team of violating rules of the NCAA. There has been an investigation going on since December last year of the players being involved in a cheap tattoo parlour scandal which the coach tried to cover up and even lied about; this is possibly the greatest sin a football coach can perform.
When further news broke that the tattoo scandal and practices dates back to 2002, a year after Tressel got hired, the issue became very serious. The athletic director issued a statement saying: “During the course of an investigation, the university and the NCAA work jointly to review any new allegations that come to light, and will continue to do so until the conclusion of the investigation. You should rest assured that these new allegations will be evaluated in exactly this manner. Beyond that, we will have no further comment."
The Ohio State President Gordon Gee was behind Tressel a hundred percent when the allegations were levied but six months down the road, he has accepted the resignation saying: "As you all know, I appointed a special committee to analyze and provide advice to me regarding issues attendant to our football program. In consultation with the senior leadership of the university and the senior leadership of the board, I have been actively reviewing the matter and have accepted coach Tressel's resignation."
