Panacea Biotec’s “ PREVENT ” – Diabetes & Complications in India: Perspectives & Treatment Options
Kolkata, 22nd May, 2011: Panacea Biotec, India’s 3rd largest biotec company proudly launched the book “ PREVENT “ which deals with Diabetes & Its Complication in India , its Perspective & Treatment Options at The Park Hotel. The panel of doctors present were Dr. Subhankar Chowdhury, Dr. Anjan Lal Dutta and Dr. Debasis Basu from Kolkata to mark the book launch. Mr. Gurinder Pal Singh & Mr. Subhasis Dasgupta was present from the company's side.
PREVENT, 1st time in India (to the best of knowledge), is a referral book for doctors. PREVENT attempts to address managing diabetes- related complications from Indian perspective.
The seminar focused on various issues related to Diabetes like Diabetic retinopathy, Diabetic neuropathy, Diabetes & kidney, Diabetes and heart and other complications. The preventive methods were also discussed in this forum.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Subhankar Chowdhury, Prof. & Head of Endocrinology IPGME&R and SSKM Hospital in Kolkata said “Nearly 51 million Indians are suffering from Diabetes at present. Diabetes often leads to multiple complications. PREVENT is a step towards making Indian clinicians at primary care setups manage Diabetes with the aim of early & proper diagnosis, preventive methods and management of the complications from Indian perspectives“.
Accordance to that Dr. Anjan Lal Dutta, Prof. of Division of Cardiology Vivekananda, Institutes of Medical Sciences in Kolkata & Past President of Cardiological Society of India added, “India has a dubious distinction of being home to millions of patients suffering from Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD) most of them also have diabetes. 40% of Diabetics die from IHD. Prevent is a book that will help all doctors to check and guard against diabetes & complications. The suggestions in PREVENT are based on Indian experience and evidence which makes it unique“.
India today is at the ascending limb of the epidemic diabetes with the prevalence and incidence increasing at an alarming rate. It is a matter of concern that lack of awareness, late diagnosis and inadequate management is resulting in compounding the patients’ misery. Moreover, there is no concrete guidance to manage Indian diabetics as we are genetically conducive to develop diabetes and complications. Taking a note from what is the need of the hour, an eminent panel from across India, comprising of renowned Diabetologists, Cardiologists, Nephrologist, Neurologist and Retionologist, under the chairmanship of Padmashree Dr. Anoop Misra
(Fortis, New Delhi) has endeavored to put in evidence and practical experience and come up with the book PREVENT.
