Dog as Step-mother of Liger Cubs in a China Zoo
We have heard stories about soft and finer relations between dissimilar species earlier too. A dog of Xixiakou Wildlife Zoo has a story to tell. Xixiakou Wildlife Zoo is located at Weihai in eastern China. Actually, we have learned the story from Cong Wen who happens to be a responsible official of the said zoo.
Four cubs, ligers as they should be termed, were born, in the beginning of May this year, to a female tiger and a male lion in the zoo. The tiger mother has looked after the ligers and helped them taking food for the first four days after their birth. She, definitely for something apprehended by her, left the little ones after that. Two of the ligers could not survive.
Then the story begins as a female dog starts to play the role of a Good Samaritan. She is presently the step mother of the two tiny ligers.
It is learned from Cong Wen that the zoo authority has a part in leading the female dog to help feeding of the ligers. The dog has her own puppies, but she is found to be prepared in offering her milk to the liger cubs. She has since then looking after the sand-colored ligers and the ligers also accepted her as their step-mother.
According to the latest findings National Geography, we have at present only thirty ligers in all.
